Gohan achieved this form when he went Super Saiyan 2. As this boy has a lot of potential and dormant power within him, the Super Saiyan 2 also in some way, helped him to achieve his Mystic form.
He did try to train himself with this form in the 7-year gap, but he didn't continue his training due to his study burdens.
